Kunzite color, treatment, and the question of staying power

Kunzite can show beautiful pink to violet color. Its appearance alone cannot tell us whether that color was treated or how it will hold up with years of wear and display.

In August 2025, a vendor offered Soul Body Gems a parcel of faceted kunzite. We were interested enough to ask about the number of stones. The vendor then told us that the 65 pieces were heated. We appreciated that disclosure and asked how stable the color would be.

What the vendor told us

The vendor first said the color would last “very long,” then described “a few years,” and later said “almost 5 years or more.” We declined the parcel because that uncertainty mattered to us. These messages document this particular offer and the vendor's statements. They are not a laboratory test of the stones or a measured timetable for color change.

What gem research can tell us

Kunzite is the pink to violet variety of spodumene. Naturally vivid examples do exist. The Gemological Institute of America explains that irradiation followed by heating can also enhance kunzite color. Our vendor disclosed heating; the conversation did not establish whether this parcel had also been irradiated. We do not infer an unreported treatment from a photograph.

GIA cautions that both natural and treated kunzite color can fade with intense light or heat. That risk does not establish a fixed lifespan for every stone. Storage, display, and exposure matter. GIA recommends keeping kunzite jewelry in a closed box or case when it is not worn and protecting it from sharp blows and sudden temperature changes.

Our decision

We passed on this offer. The vendor's willingness to disclose heat treatment and discuss color stability gave us the information we needed to decide. The images here record an offered parcel that Soul Body Gems did not sell or independently test.
