Jewelry Care

A little thoughtful care helps you enjoy your jewelry for years to come.

Care depends on the gemstone, metal, treatments, and construction of your piece. Follow any item-specific instructions first. If you are unsure, ask us before cleaning.

Everyday Care

  • Put jewelry on after cosmetics, lotion, and perfume.
  • Remove it before swimming, showering, exercise, housework, or activities that could knock or catch it.
  • Keep it away from cleaners, chlorine, excessive heat, and sudden temperature changes.
  • Wipe gently with a clean, soft cloth after wearing. Store pieces separately to prevent scratches and tangled chains.

Cleaning Your Piece

A soft cloth is a good starting point. Do not assume that a jewelry dip, polishing compound, brush, or soaking method is suitable for every stone or finish. Avoid household ultrasonic and steam cleaners unless a qualified jeweler confirms they are suitable for your specific piece.

Different Materials, Different Needs

Sterling silver & solid gold

Use a soft cloth for routine care. A jeweler can advise on tarnish removal or deeper cleaning that protects the setting and stones. Keep treated polishing cloths and compounds away from gemstones and decorative finishes unless their suitability is confirmed.

Plated & coated finishes

Avoid abrasive polishing and scrubbing, which can wear through the finish. Use a soft cloth gently and follow the particular listing’s care guidance.

Opal

Protect opal from knocks, high heat, and sudden temperature changes. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Ask us for cleaning instructions for your specific opal, particularly if it is hydrophane, treated, or assembled.

Pearls

Wipe pearls gently after wearing. Keep them away from chemicals and abrasive surfaces. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Allow the string to dry completely before wearing strung pearls after cleaning.

Amber, turquoise, emerald & other delicate gems

Cleaning must suit the material and any treatments. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning for amber, turquoise, and fracture-filled gems. Ask before soaking or using chemical products; a stone’s hardness alone does not determine safe care.

Adjustable rings

Adjust gently within the intended range. Do not pull on the gemstone, twist the setting, or repeatedly bend the band back and forth. Ask us for help with the fit rather than forcing it.

Check Before Wearing

If a stone moves, a prong catches, or a clasp feels insecure, stop wearing the piece and have it checked by a qualified jeweler.
