Science & locality

Andean Opal is a trade name for greenish-blue opal from Peru. Its appeal lies in its body color, translucency and patterns, rather than the rainbow play-of-color associated with precious opal. Opal is hydrated silica, commonly written SiO₂ · nH₂O.

The Acarí mining area in the Arequipa region is a documented source of Peruvian blue opal. That is a known locality for the material generally; we do not have a specific mine recorded for the pendants shown here.

GIA describes Peruvian Andean opal as generally translucent and discusses its chrysocolla-rich geological setting. A blue color alone does not identify a material or establish the cause of its color. This profile does not assign a particular coloring mineral or treatment status to the pictured carvings without analysis.

What to look for

  • Color and pattern: Consider the balance of blue-green areas, lighter zones and any visible matrix.
  • Carving: Look at the detail, polish and condition of thin edges and projecting features.
  • Disclosure: Check the seller’s identification, origin information and any stated treatments. Appearance alone cannot confirm these.

Care

Opal’s hardness is approximately 5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, but resistance to scratching is different from resistance to breakage. Protect carvings from knocks, high heat and sudden temperature changes. Clean gently with warm soapy water; avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaning.

Metaphysical traditions

In contemporary crystal traditions, blue and green opal are associated with calm, gentle communication and emotional reflection. The dragon motif can also serve as a personal symbol of strength, protection or transformation. These are spiritual interpretations, not laboratory findings or medical effects. Crystal practices do not replace medical care.
