THE GEMSTONE LIBRARY
Black Tourmaline (Erongo)
Background
Black tourmaline from Namibia’s Erongo region is admired for its glossy surfaces, striated prisms and sharply formed terminations. Our January 2024 collection features small specimens supplied from this celebrated mineral district.
Science / Origin / Testing
Black tourmaline is commonly called schorl, an iron-rich member of the tourmaline supergroup. Research on Erongo tourmalines documents compositional variation, so the appearance of a black crystal alone cannot distinguish every tourmaline species. The region’s geology includes granite and pegmatite cavities that provide settings for many collector specimens. The Erongo origin is our supplied collection provenance; these photographs are not a laboratory determination of composition or mine.
Metaphysical Meaning
In contemporary metaphysical practice, black tourmaline carries a meaning of protection, grounding and personal boundaries. Some people use it as a reminder of courage and steady energy; these are spiritual interpretations rather than scientifically demonstrated effects.
