A profile focused on faceted spinel whose apparent color changes with the lighting.
Why the lighting matters
A gemstone selectively absorbs parts of the light passing through it. Daylight-equivalent and incandescent illumination have different spectral compositions, so some spinels appear bluer in one and more violet in the other. GIA has documented this behavior in faceted spinel; it is not present in every stone.
Viewing faceted gems
Compare the same gem under different lights while keeping the viewing angle similar. Camera white balance and exposure can also affect photographs. The pictured gems are supplied as Color Change Spinel; the photos do not establish an exact color-change grade, origin or treatment history.
