Natrolite (Russia)
Pale polished natrolite from our Russian collection, with a soft, silvery appearance and fine internal texture.
What is natrolite?
Natrolite is a sodium-bearing zeolite: a hydrated aluminosilicate with the ideal formula Na₂Al₂Si₃O₁₀·2H₂O. Its name refers to sodium. Water is part of its crystal structure, rather than simply moisture trapped on the surface.
It often forms slender crystals and radiating groups, but can also occur as compact or granular masses suitable for polishing. Colors include white, colorless, gray and subtle blue, yellow or pink; the luster ranges from glassy to pearly.
The Russian connection
The Khibiny and Lovozero massifs of Russia’s Kola Peninsula are documented natrolite localities. Natrolite can develop late in the history of igneous rocks, filling cavities or seams. Russia is the sourcing locality for the palm stones photographed here; a specific mine has not been assigned to this collection.
Reading a polished surface
The photographed palms show pale mottling and a fine silvery texture. These are observations of the collection, rather than an identification of every visible grain. Polished mineral material may include associated minerals, and a photograph alone cannot establish its complete composition.
Care
Natrolite has a Mohs hardness of about 5–5.5, perfect cleavage and brittle behavior. Protect polished pieces from impacts and scratches. As a practical precaution for a mixed mineral carving, use a soft cloth and avoid harsh cleaning, soaking or heating.
Meaning and reflection
The quiet palette can serve as a personal reminder to pause, simplify and make room for clear thought. This is an invitation to reflection, rather than a measured effect of the mineral.
