Villiaumite
Villiaumite is a sodium fluoride mineral, NaF, known for carmine-red, pink and orange colors. It belongs to the cubic crystal system.
Mineral character
The Handbook of Mineralogy describes villiaumite as commonly granular or massive, with cubic crystals comparatively rare. It has a glassy luster, perfect cubic cleavage and a Mohs hardness of 2–2.5. It occurs in nepheline syenite and related pegmatites, with documented localities including Guinea, Russia and Greenland.
Care
Villiaumite is brittle and water-soluble. Keep specimens dry; avoid soaking, washing or water-based cleaning. Its low hardness calls for gentle handling and protected display.
Our collection
These photographs show our December 2024 material supplied as Villiaumite. A locality and specimen-specific laboratory identification have not been established for these photographed pieces.
