Iron Quartz (Turkey)

Quartz from a newer Turkish find reported in 2025, sold as citrine but identified as externally iron-stained quartz.

Sample: 1559 (#6 citrine?). Completed: March 27, 2026.

Finding: Not citrine. The color comes from a thin iron-oxide film on the quartz rather than internal coloration.

Where the color comes from

The researcher describes coarse drusy quartz deposited after brittle deformation fractured the surrounding rock and hydrothermal fluids entered it. The coating is mainly fine-grained hematite, with magnesium, calcium and manganese also recorded in the report’s discussion. Analysis of a fresh surface did not detect iron, supporting the distinction between the quartz interior and its coating.

Provenance: Turkey; the 2025 discovery date is from Soul Body Gems sourcing notes.

Also listed as: Citrine (Turkey) · Iron Quartz (Turkey).

Summary of findings: This is an interesting specimen (Fig. 1). It is a coarse drusy quartz specimen from a brecciated zone of country rock that has undergone brittle deformation followed by hydrothermal fluid invasion which deposited the quartz crystals. The color oof the quartz is caused by a thin film of iron oxides and is not internal (Table 1). There is plenty iron oxide present on coating and it is mainly fine-grained hematite plus several wt. % of magnesium , around 1 wt. % calcium and less than 1 wt. % manganese. This is not citrine, just stained quartz.
